How to fill an urn: A calm step-by-step explanation
Filling an urn is a careful and intimate moment. Many people find it daunting, but in practice, it is simpler than you think. With the right preparation, you can do this in a calm and dignified manner.
Who fills the urn?
You can do this yourself, but many crematoria offer to take care of it for you.
If you prefer to do it yourself, take your time and make sure you don't have to work in a hurry.
What do you need?
- The urn
- The cremation urn from the crematorium
- A funnel (possibly made of paper)
- A stable surface
- An ash bag (optional)
Prepare everything beforehand; this will give you peace of mind.
Opening the urn
Most urns have a sealing lid or screw cap at the bottom.
Carefully unscrew it and place it on a clean surface.
Filling the urn
1. (Optional) Place an ash bag in the urn.
2. Place the funnel in the opening of the urn.
3. Gently pour the desired amount of ashes into the funnel.
4. Take small breaks so that the ashes do not scatter.
Tip: It is preferable to fill the urn indoors, so it is not windy.
Closing the urn
Close the lid firmly, but without force. With some urns, you can secure the seal with a drop of glue or wax — this is not mandatory.
A moment for yourself
Many people experience the minutes after filling as special. Allow yourself that peace. It is a beautiful moment to reflect on everything this urn will signify.
